Two strange things

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Was first person in my building at work this work. Am therefore listening to Justin Timberlake as loudly as possible. Also, found myself shouting: “First!”

Am apparently a regular for breakfast at the Burger King next to Nora’s daycare. Was greeted with “Hungry today?” and a smile by the woman at the drive through. Don’t consider this a good thing. Vow to cross the street to McDonald’s… for a while, at least.

This is how exciting my life is:

That the thing that makes me log in and use my blog in who knows how crazy long is this: Sonic. Brought back. THE STEAK SANDWICH! (That’s chicken fried steak, for the uninitiated.) For a limited time only, but still. I know what I’m eating in February now. I craved this sandwich through my entire pregnancy, and now they have it. Figures. Go now. Get thyself one. I’m not talking about the breakfast toaster steak sandwich silliness they have right now, too. I’m talking about the good ole steak sandwich that I know and love. But here’s the thing: they have it on toaster bread. That’s just ridiculous. Ask for it on a bun. Also, get tots and a cherry limeade, enjoy, and know that all is right with the world.

P.S. This baby is FIVE MONTHS OLD NOW! Can you believe it? I can’t. :-)

Where any town of decent size has at least four places to choose from to get a Plate Lunch.

Where macaroni and cheese is a vegetable.

Where tea comes with it, and you know it’ll be sweet unless you specify otherwise.

Where you always get a choice between a roll and cornbread.

Today.

Mamma Mia!

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

We went up the the Orpheum in Memphis yesterday and saw Mamma Mia! It was SO MUCH FUN! Errol even liked it. We both agree it’s the most fun we have had at a musical ever. All the music is ABBA songs, but it was actually a good story, even. Well, good story as far as a musical goes. It was cute. Everyone should see this show. I think it would be a good gateway musical for the un-initiated, too.

Even though I already have ABBA’s greatest hits (Yes, I do. Who doesnt honestly love at least one ABBA song?) which covers the songs in the show, I’m thinking of going ahead and getting the Broadway cast Mamma Mia! soundtrack, too. I wish I could get a recording of the traveling cast we saw. They kicked some vocal ass.

Afterward, we had dinner at the Rendezvous. It’s this great barbecue place in an alley. SO good. I should have taken a picture of my ribs. They were a masterpiece. It’s just that when I have good ribs in front of me, I go on auto-pilot, pull my hair back, my sleeves up and just go. My mom would always bring me to this place when I was little, and I got as many college friends to go there with me as a could. I honestly cannot count how many times I’ve been there. I have to say it’s my favorite place for ribs in Memphis, Corky’s be damned. I have so many good associations and fond memories there. They only serve the traditional Memphis dry rub ribs, so if you like ‘em smothered in sauce, use the bottle on the table to add some.

Go to Krispy Kreme today and get a free doughnut for me. Then, go again and get a free doughnut for yourself. I would give my right arm to have a Krispy Kreme here. Arrr.

Blahdy blah blah

OK, so it’s been a week since I blogged. Kitten is doing well. I can’t believe it, but he’s gotten noticeably bigger in just a week! Such a miraculous thing, watching him grow. We have so much fun playing with him, and tossing him around. Mei Mei is still thoroughly annoyed.

We had a small breakthrough last night. Abner went up to her while she was laying on the floor on her back, and there was some calm sniffing. She didn’t growl or hiss, or get up and run away. When she runs, he chases. I know it’s all a big game to him. But, she’s become more curious about him, so it’s a step forward. We’re still not quote to a time where we can leave them alone together unsupervised.

Went to a new place for lunch today (as in, totally new to town as of this month, new): Petra. It’s a greek/mediterranean place, which is wierd cause we already have a perfectly good greek restaurant, but I digress. (It’s called Volta Taverna, and I love it.) Going to a new restaurant here is always an adventure. Some places that I have tried when they were new took forever even though we were the only people there. I can’t think of the names of any of these restaurants in question, cause they’re probably closed now.

So, Petra… excellent service, clean, upscale decor, very good food. They have the usual: hummus, felafel, gyros, etc. They also have kebabs and such. I got a salad with chicken shawarma on top. There was an amazing seasoning and herbs tossed with it. SO good. The bad news: my freakin salad, smaller than a salad from Sonic, was 9.95! This thing was 1/3 the size of a main dish salad I can get at any casual dining place. If my co-worker, Kris, who went with me, hadn’t ordered a hummus and pita appetizer and shared it with me I would still totally be hungry. Again, the taste was amazing, but if I want a gyro I will be going to Volta.

Verdict, Petra: gooooood food, bad value. Best of luck, you might need it.

Which leads me to the list of restaurants I wish we had here:
an Irish pub
an Indian restaurant with a buffet
a cajun restaurant
Arby’s

Peace out.

In a moment of pure insanity (or was it genius?), I gave in to my desires and had a delicious BBQ sandwich plate from Handy Andy. (Home of another fave of mine, The Greatest Turkey Sandwich in the World.) Worth every point!

Easter Monday

Monday, April 17th, 2006

Easter Monday is a very special holiday to me. It’s a time when I take a moment to go to the store and buy candy, mostly egg-shaped, for 50-percent off.

Also, this year, it begins the “week of ham.” Now we go on ham overload. Important message of the day: never buy a 7 lb. ham to feed 3 people.
